From Compliance to Strategy: My Recent Deep Dive on the OH&S SafetyPod
Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) are the backbone of our workforce. Yet, I’ve seen firsthand that many of these organizations struggle because they lack the dedicated resources to build truly effective health and safety programs. This challenge—and how to overcome it—was the central theme of my recent guest appearance on the OH&S SafetyPod.
I had a great time discussing the core concepts from my book, Health and Safety Programs in Small and Medium-Sized Businesses, and exploring how companies can move beyond "checking a box" to create a culture of genuine protection.
Moving Beyond "Paperwork" Safety
In many SMBs, safety responsibilities are often handed to an employee who already has a full plate and no formal safety training. This usually leads to a reactive approach—where the focus is on filing paperwork rather than preventing hazards.
During the interview, we explored why safety shouldn't just be about meeting minimum regulatory requirements. Instead, it should be guided by:
- Broader business drivers: Efficiency and employee retention.
- Risk management goals: Protecting your most valuable assets.
- A Systemic View: Understanding the difference between a standalone safety program and a comprehensive Safety Management System.
Focus Where it Matters Most
One of the most critical points we covered was injury causation. If you don’t understand why incidents happen, you can’t prevent them before they occur.
For organizations with limited time and budget, my advice is simple: Prioritize. You must focus on the hazards with the greatest potential for serious injury. By engaging your employees to help identify these risks and brainstorm solutions, you create a more resilient and proactive workplace.
