While at the American Society of Safety Professionals’ annual safety conference (Safety 2024), I had the privilege of co-presenting 2 different presentations related to Safety Management Systems (Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems). The first presentation was presented with Amy Timmerman, CSP, CHES, Chair of the ANSI/ASSP Z10 Committee, and Assistant Professor at Illinois State University. The presentation summarized the value of the ANSI/ASSP Z10 standard, benefits, features, success stories and implementation considerations.

The other presentation was given on Friday, August 9th and was co-presented with Scott DeBow, CSP, ARM, who is an ASSP Director-at-Large, and is Principal HS/E Advisor with Avetta. That presentation was about the history of consensus safety standards, more broadly, and about OHSMSs, more particularly. The presentation centered around issues facing multi-employer workplaces, to include those related to safety, and potential benefits from the application of occupational health and safety management systems in some circumstances. It also encouraged participation in the standards-setting process by other members of the American Society of Safety Professionals.
